SCI Programs

The following SCI research programs involve both basic research as well as on-going clinical trials. As new advances are occurring daily, this information will change to reflect the growing nature of the FES Center.

Standing & Transfer SCI

Standing and Transfer

The intended result of this study is to utilize the implanted stimulator to stand and transfer using an assistive device. This function is achieved through the exercise and control of selected muscles in the legs and low back.

High Tetraplegia SCI

High Tetraplegia (C3/C4) Whole Arm & Hand Function

This program examines what new physiological and technological breakthroughs that are required to restore arm and hand function to individuals with high level tetraplegia.

Walking and Incomplete Parlysis SCI

Walking after Incomplete Paralysis

This program explores the potential of utilizing an implanted stimulator to achieve or improve the ability to walk after an incomplete spinal cord injury or stroke.

bowel and bladder SCI

Bowel, Bladder & Sexual Function

Restoration of bladder, bowel and sexual function in those with SCI is multi-institution endeavor. This program involves implantable and temporary therapies designed to address several applications.

Hand Grasp SCI

Hand Grasp & Release for C5-C6 Tetraplegia

Building on past achievements in the return of hand function, this program refines and expands the capabilities of implanted stimulation and control resulting in functional hand grasp.

Pressure Sore Prevention & treatment

Pressure Sore Prevention and Treatment

Utilizing electrical stimulation to speed healing as well as prevent the formation of pressure sores, this program spans several technologies and treatments.

Trunk Control & Posture Assistance

Trunk Control and Posture Assistance:

The paralysis of trunk muscles can lead to postural deformities and reduce the stability for upper body function. This program utilizes implanted stimulation to maintain core muscle stabilization.
